The Tokyo District Court today dismissed claims by Mr. Junko Nobuhira for civil damages resulting from allegations by his wife, Nobuko Nobuhira, that she had been sexually assaulted by Daisaku Ikeda, the honorary president of the Soka Gakkai.

The Chief Judge, Shintaro Kato, ruled that there was no evidence to believe that any of the rape allegations were factual. The judge stated that although the honorary president of a large religious organization has to meet various types of public criticism, “there is no reason that he has to be exposed to scandalous news reports written with very little factual grounds -- such as this case.”

Mrs. Nobuko Nobuhira's past claims against Mr. Ikeda were dismissed earlier by the Tokyo District Court as well as the Tokyo High Court. Mr. Junko Nobuhira, in separate court cases filed against him, has been ordered by the court to repay more than 53 million yen (approx. US$500,000) he had extorted from various Soka Gakkai members in Hokkaido.

Judge Kato stated that he found Mr. Nobuhira's suit in this case was an extension of his desire to damage the reputation of Mr. Ikeda. In rejecting the suit, the judge concluded: “It would not only cause the defendant further damage to continue to examine this case, but also lead the court to assist the plaintiff in his absurd plan.”
